Tavy Cleave Walk
This walk gets you quickly up on to the high moors of west Dartmoor and brings you home along the upper reaches of the River Tavy. Don't expect too much company.
Here are some directions:
Head to Mary Tavy on the Tavistock to Okehampton road (A396). From Mary Tavy follow signs to Horndon and the Elephant's Nest pub. From Horndon head towards Willsworthy and Lane's End, which might feel more like Land's End when you get to the car park at the end of the lane! Remember this walk really is for those who want to get out there on their own. Park at the car park at Lane's End (OS Map 191 Map Ref. SX537825) and ahead of you is Ger Tor. Follow your nose to Ger Tor and from the top you will see Hare Tor. It is an easy scramble to the top of Hare Tor which opens up a wonderful veiw of the high moors from Great Links Tor past Great Kneeset to Fur Tor. From the top of Hare Tor, head west along down to the upper reaches of the River Tavy. If there has been heavy rain the moor may well be sodden like a wet sponge and the river in spate. Trudging through the valley you may encounter the odd sheep. Take the somewhat vague and scrambling path that runs alongside the river. The early stages of the path require eagle eyes to follow it and a fair bit of rock hopping, just follow the river along and you will be well rewarded with the series of powerful waterfalls (tamer in summer). Follow the steep sided river valley until it begins to open up. At that point you will come across a sluice hut and millrace that signifies the start of the leat that runs along the western side of the valley. Follow this around Nat Tor and then back to the car park.
In less than fair weather this walk can take around two and a half hours. A good place to refuel is definatly the Elephant's Nest pub just a mile and a half down the road at Horndon. This walk is dramatic and varied and away from the crowds.
